"When you are creator of the universe, the origin and form of love, and have forever existed before time began, you kind of get to call the shots"

At the birthing of our existence we are all given a name to represent ourselves to the world. Some are names that have lived on through thousands of generations and others… well let’s just say their parents felt overtly creative or cruel at the time. Nevetheless tradition would hold that there is a minimum of a first and last name that identifies us as us, and perhaps clues a little of where we are from. Thankfully, while some of you were unfortunate to have less than stellar names beholdeth to you, there is the ability to legally change it later in life. Whatever the letters strung together that we have been given there will be underlying information of origin, place, time and meaning behind it.

Lachlan, my own name, has Scottish, Irish and Viking Roots: “Land of lochs”, “Land of fjords” “Warlike”. These words can give us great insight into the question of who we are and where do we belong in this giant world. Knowing information about ourselves is an instinctive normal part of being “prepared” for the life ahead of us. It is also popular to eventually come to terms with your family blood line. People that have lived and died multiple centuries ago that are tied to us in some way helps satiate the hunger for security and perhaps where you got that quirk in your personality from.

So, where does this leave God in the picture? How did he get his name? Unlike us, most of his names are self appointed. When you are creator of the universe, the origin and form of love, and have forever existed before time began, you kind of get to call the shots. Part of calling these shots is choosing how to describe your infinite self to finite creatures with a limited vocabulary about your unlimited self. It soon gets mind bending trying to, essentially, describe God with mere words, but thanks to the complete, closed canon and final word of the Bible – He has left us with a few of his innumerable names along with how some of his very children have chosen to glorify and identify him.

Below is a non-exhaustive alphabetical list of at least 100 names which you can read up the exact verse it came from using the book chapter and verse beside it. e.g Emmanuel is in the book of Matthew, chapter 1, verse 23. This is not to say the attached verse is necessarily the singular place the name is found. Many of the names will be used again and again scattered across the Bible but these are a good starting point. Credit goes to urbanareas.net for making this list which I have used for this blog post.
