Switch To A “Win What You Can” Mindset

Many of you may have heard of this gentleman’s name mentioned in the internet space, others will need introducing.

Goggins has a lot of good material online with a regular instagram check in, usually entailing being out for a run or in the gym whilst dishing out motivation and encouragement to his followers. He’s what you may call, a “straight shooter” – somebody who is direct to the point with a no b**sh** policy. He won’t feed you lies about how to jet to the good life in 12 easy steps – instead he will tell you to embrace what the rough part of your life can teach you about yourself and how to grow from it. He’s not for everybody, nobody is popular globally, however I enjoyed his book “Can’t Hurt Me” on Audible. As somebody who struggles with self belief, his ability to expose people’s self limiting beliefs is always welcome as advice. Goggins experience in the military and the success that preceded the sellout of his books is an inspiration considering the life he has bottom up built from. I won’t go into all that here as I encourage you to read the samples of his book or even easier, visit some of his numerous Youtube videos and you’ll soon get a gauge.

1. Win the Battle of the Morning Time
Generally speaking, most of us could go to bed earlier and wake up a little earlier. Often a 1% sacrifice for a 5-10% return on improving the quality of your next day. Does everybody have to get up at 4:00, 5:00, 6:00AM to have a good start to a new day? No, but myself included, we all feel the pull towards the scrolling of news feeds that can amount to hours of lost time for no good reason. Even worse when it’s all news tilted in a negative direction. Unlike our stomachs that need filling up with fuel each day to function, our minds do not need the brain food that social media has to offer. It is healthier without it. It is hard to dispute the truism that how you start your day can dictate a lot of how you finish your day. There is however, nothing wrong with replacing what you read in the morning. Some of the most brilliant minds in the world were all morning readers and I’ll bet what they consumed was beneficial and uplifting. Find a book that stays on topic and more importantly, keeps you positive.
2. There are Many Snooze Buttons in Life
Ahhh the snooze button. How many bitter sweet moments do you think this feature alone has created for people since it’s beginning? Uncountable. Delaying the inevitable is part of being a regular human, and how painful it is to think that. We don’t wish to face what lies ahead of us and with the tap of a button, we can forget responsibilities exist. If you’ve ever seen those videos of dog’s entering the bedroom of their sleeping master, they try to wake them up using one of many methods. Lying on top of them, barking, howling, the dreaded puppy eyes, or all of the above. That is what adult life feels like. The problems of today don’t go away by ignorance but compound into larger ones the more time is given to pointless slumber. What If instead, it was called the “delay life” button? How many times would you press it each morning? Are there times where extra sleep is not only needed, but wise to take? Of course. I encourage you to be strategic about it. But for the majority of the population, we fool ourselves that an extra 10 minutes here and there does not entail any risky negative side effects.

3. Bring Your Best Self
Another cliche that gets overlooked but how true it is that when we bring our best version of ourselves into all the different arenas of life, we could have a bad day, yet close our eyes on our pillow to the knowledge that your utmost has been given. Growing and learning from that point on is far clearer than if you were to leave effort in reserve. Being your best self is not about faking an appearance to everybody else but it is a healthy thing to stretch and test your strength, character, knowledge, people skills and resolve, wherever you turn up in life. If people have a problem with that, they are only hiding their own potential.
4. Complacency Robs You
One thing mentioned in this video that I like is the notion that we are prone to lose the “job interview” version of ourselves once position for this or that is acquired in life. The time, care, preparation and effort that was invested into seizing a very important moment in your life has become the drudgery of today, tomorrow and the next day. Now that you have obtained a certain position or privilege, the grip loosens on the disciplines and preparedness that got you to that point. Complacency can be acquainted with the strangling weeds in an otherwise blooming garden. Whatever the method is for removing them (take it poison treatment or digging out on your hands and knees), you must keep at it. Pay attention to where they pop up from. Hopefully over time you’ve improved your systems of work so the neccessary discipline of weeding gets done better and more efficiently. Ignoring weeding can rob your backyard of a flourishing garden bed, likewise a complacent man can have his life robbed from him when forgetting what got him somewhere.
Win what you can. I needn’t have to explain this one away but hopefully nudging it in front of your eyes will be enough to spark the reminder. A reminder that all of life is not about winning gold on every track in every race but instead go home with a few silent wins under your belt. So small, so insignificant to everybody else that you can smile to yourself that your real competitor and rival, is only yourself.
